Media Book Reviews:

A new and much-needed resource for parents, Homeschooling the Challenging Child by Christine M. Field, is a book that rejects the myth that all learning problems are discipline problems. It is an honest look at the problems of teaching any child who is challenging, more specifically, who demands special effort or dedication. The instructions in this volume are addressed to learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory problems, eyesight perception disorders, sensory disorders, and ADHD. Homeschooling the Challenging Child also gives advice on working with a child who has personality differences, discipline issues, or communication problems that affect his learning.

The author of this book, Christine M. Field, is a former trial lawyer who turned homeschool mom to teach her four children, one of whom was a daughter with a learning disability. Mrs. Field is the author of five other books on the subjects of homeschooling, adoption, and being a stay-at-home mom. Mrs. Field speaks frequently on homeschooling topics and writes for various homeschool publications.

The first half of the book is dedicated mainly to the discussion of different learning disabilities, including lists to use in determining the nature of the learning disorder, or simply if one does exist. This book not only offers tips on evaluating a child's problem, but it tells how to develop a learning plan for each child. The chapter about personality conflict discusses the temperament types. One chapter discusses learning styles and teaches how to determine your child's learning style. Further, it discusses discipline measures, and also the problems moms and dads may face of discouragement, stress, and grief. The last chapter deals with how to find help through support groups, health-care professionals, and other resources.

Any parent who plans to home educate a child whom he suspects has a learning problem should read this helpful book. Its practical advice will help that parent who hopes to offer the best educational opportunities available to his child, to do so. This book is a must-read for the parent who fears he may not be up to the challenge. - Elece Hollis, Christian Book Previews.com
