Learning Disability Therapy
"the most effective learning program for the
struggling student available anywhere at any price."
Correct or improve any Learning Disability
ESSENTIAL LEARNING INSTITUTE - ELI
Essential Learning Institute offers a unique and effective program for students with learning difficulties. After attending conventions, software shows and examining numerous educational catalogs, we have found the majority of Learning disability programs focus on reading remediation, tutoring or training. There are very few technologically advanced programs that approach specific areas of educational therapy. A thorough understanding of this information will help you distinguish between Essential Learning Institute’s extensive educational therapy program and most other remediation and tutorial approaches.

Essential Learning Institute has at its educational core a program called Essential Learning Systems™. Essential Learning Systems™ has a distinct advantage over most programs because it is strictly an educational therapy program. The result of this therapeutic approach to learning difficulties is dramatic gains in reading, writing, speaking, spelling and comprehension of the English language. These changes occur in developmental order from simple to complex.
The approach of Essential Learning Institute is to first determine the root cause of the learning difficulty and then prescribe an individualized strategy to remove problem areas. This approach is unique. ELI is therapeutic not compensatory.
Visual, Auditory, and Motor Kinetic
Computer-based not tutor-based. Through our evaluations and assessments, we are able to obtain valuable data enabling us to pinpoint areas that need to be strengthened for the struggling student. One evaluation is the Learning Efficiency Test by Dr. Raymond Webster. This test checks auditory and visual memory and places individuals in a percentile rank according to chronological age. For example a student may score in the fifth percentile against their age group on this type of evaluation. This means that 95% of the students at the same age level scored higher on this particular subtest. This student could participate in remedial reading classes for years, but if the low level of auditory memory sequencing skills are not improved, he/she will never really succeed. Struggle will be constant. ELI’s goal is to strengthen and rebuild these skills so the student can succeed with normal functioning abilities.- Addresses the cause
- Provides exercises that train or retrain the brain
- Builds new aptitudes
- Is a reflexive approach
- Changes the whole life

When we check auditory memory, we find large deficits in many students. The student with an auditory memory deficit is one who cannot correctly remember sequences of sounds. This problem greatly hampers reading, spelling and general behavior in the home and classroom. For instance, a student who cannot remember correct sound sequences, cannot remember which speech sounds correspond to printed, coded words. In reading, we are actually seeing a coded form of a word and making a speech sound from the code. Thus, the terms "reading" and "decoding" are used interchangeably in the field of education.

Without speech memory of words intact, a student will have difficulty decoding new words. Trying to match sounds with symbols becomes frustrating and confusing. A student with this deficit will have trouble taking notes in the classroom, because he cannot remember the sequence of the lecture long enough to take notes on paper. Sequence of directions and commands are also troublesome. When the student is given several things to do, he simply forgets the list. The parent usually labels this behavior as being non-motivational in nature and so the true source of the problem is seldom addressed. The frustrated student is surrounded by a myriad of continual problems and unless intervention and correction occur the sense of failure increases.
"...and then I got on my bicycle and rode..."
Approximately 30% of our clients have difficulty in the area of visual memory. This task involves remembering visual symbols or words and putting them in correct sequence. Imagine, being unable to remember what you see and trying to copy a volume of information either from a textbook or blackboard to a piece of paper? A student with a visual memory deficit will also have difficulty remembering the sequences of numbers when copying math problems from the blackboard to a piece of paper. The student will generally write several numbers incorrectly, obviously, the answers will be incorrect. It also takes this type of student much longer to copy problems or words. Lack of adequate time results in incomplete assignments and lower grades.
Once identification is complete, the next step is correction. Can anything be done to help a student with low auditory or visual memory skills? Can a student that cannot sequence properly be helped? Sometimes a student has difficulty integrating information between auditory and visual modes. He/She might see words and write them, but cannot say words quickly. Can anything be done about it? Can we train the brain to integrate information from one sensory input area to another? Can we strengthen memory scores? YES!
YES! One can change the ability to process and restore memory. In doing research for ELI, we found that there were many programs using nonsense words that had been working on these specific skills for years. ELS™ is designed to adapt skills and then relate new skills to process and restore memory. ELS™ is designed to adapt skills and then relate new skills to real words. Thus, a quick application into the actual world of school learning occurs for the student.
ELI works in several ways
- to identify the root cause of the problem,
- to strengthen weak areas,
- to change the weak modalities of learning and
- to train the brain to integrate the information.

When all this occurs, we have a student who has the skills to learn. A student equipped for learning becomes motivated. Students are constantly challenged to gain new information and are able to transfer learned material to long-term memory.
The main difference between ELI and other programs is that ELS™ is not merely a reading program. There are few companies in the business of educational therapy with a program as massive as ELS™. Our goal is to serve all students, especially the non-reached population. If a student is progressing in any other program, we do not automatically recommend that this student be enrolled in ours.
We are seeking the student that has not been able to progress in any other program and is feeling the discouragement. Because we are willing to serve the student who is failing in the classroom and students, young and old, who will likely drop out of school, our population is unique.
ELS™ is referred to as an "intensive care" learning system. The educational therapy approach may be the final approach to reaching students who have not learned by other methods. The multi-sensory, interactive approach is highly successful with the non-achieving students. I am sure you can imagine the success a marginal student on ELS™ would experience.
Enables the brain to communicate
with itself more effectively!
ELS™ uses Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) extensively. LPC is a highly compressed human speech voice that can be played through low-memory computers. The sound device allows us to have an immediate effect with a multi-sensory process volume controlled decibels of sound in each ear.
- External stimulation of the language centers of the brain
- Interactive, multi-sensory, computer-aided instruction
- Intensive repetition
- Human-like friendly responses
Our product is ultimately exclusive. ELS™ cannot be compared with any reading or learning program. There are thousands of reading programs on the market and many are excellent, multi-sensory approaches, but they do not identify the lack of success and work on strengthening specific weak areas as Essential Learning Systems™. Students will have success in our program, which will lead to success in existing school programs.
Treat the cause not the symptom
Following are brief points that are exclusive to Essential Learning Systems™:
- ELS™ contains 2,600 recorded words, phrases and sentences, all recorded in digitized human speech, compressed and available through basic memory on an Apple or on an IBM.
- ELS™ has a total Management System incorporated. All scoring is computed by the computer.
- ELS™ is an educational therapy program that involves neurologically natural skills and strengthens weak areas of processing memory and integration training.
All of this makes ELS™ a unique product.
We at Essential Learning Institute have developed a unique way to deliver to you, what we believe to be, the most effective learning program for the struggling student available anywhere at any price. We consider it our mission to assist you in making your child a successful student, capable of achieving his/her highest learning potential.
